About This Formula
Jia Wei Xiao Yao San — sometimes called Free & Easy Wanderer Plus — builds directly on the classic Xiao Yao San pattern of Liver Qi stagnation with underlying Spleen weakness. What sets it apart is the addition of two cooling herbs, Mu Dan Pi and Zhi Zi, which address stagnation that has begun to generate heat. This ‘constraint turning to heat’ often appears as irritability, restlessness, flushing, red or dry eyes, a bitter taste, or heat-type PMS.
Where standard Xiao Yao San suits stress, mood, and digestive complaints without obvious heat signs, this version is traditionally chosen when those same patterns come with warmth and agitation. It soothes the Liver and moves stuck Qi while gently clearing the associated heat, and supports the Spleen and Blood underneath. Because the two formulas overlap so closely, matching the presence or absence of heat signs to the right one is exactly what the screening below — and a practitioner’s input — helps determine.
