General Acupuncture

The basics of acupuncture — what it is, how it works, and what to expect.

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine involving the insertion of very thin needles through the skin at strategic points on the body. People seek it for pain, stress, and other concerns, and the evidence varies by condition.

Very safe when performed by a licensed acupuncturist. We use single-use, sterile, disposable needles — never reused. Dr. Winke is a Florida-licensed acupuncturist (DACM, L.Ac.).

Needles are hair-thin — most people feel little to nothing, sometimes a brief pinch or a dull "heavy" sensation. Most patients find sessions deeply relaxing, and many fall asleep.

Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body that correspond to neural pathways and fascial planes, triggering the release of endorphins, modulating the autonomic nervous system, and reducing inflammatory markers. Modern research continues to validate what classical practitioners observed thousands of years ago.

It depends on the condition and how long you’ve had it. Acute issues may resolve in a few visits; chronic conditions like sciatica or fibromyalgia typically respond to a course of weekly sessions, with Dr. Winke reassessing your progress along the way.

New Patient Signature Acupuncture and New Patient Cosmetic Acupuncture visits are 75 minutes. Returning Signature Acupuncture, returning Cosmetic Acupuncture, and Microneedling visits are 60 minutes. Cupping and Bodywork visits are 30 minutes. Injection Therapy visits are 15 minutes. Cupping, Bodywork, Microneedling, and Injection Therapy use the same treatment duration for new and returning patients.

New Patient Signature Acupuncture and New Patient Cosmetic Acupuncture include a comprehensive evaluation and take 75 minutes. Other first visits follow the duration of the booked service. Wear loose, comfortable clothing.

Loose, comfortable clothing is best. We need access to your arms and legs and sometimes your back and abdomen. We provide draping for all treatments.

We recommend avoiding intense exercise for a few hours after treatment. Light walking is fine.

Conditions & Effectiveness

How acupuncture works for specific concerns — pain, stress, fertility, and more.

Yes — acupuncture has been studied for pain conditions, headaches, stress, and other concerns. Evidence quality varies by condition. Our condition pages cite the specific research.

Acupuncture reduces pain by stimulating A-delta and C nerve fibers, triggering endorphin and enkephalin release, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, and modulating the pain gate mechanism in the spinal cord.

Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reduces cortisol levels, increases serotonin and dopamine, and promotes the deep relaxation response patients often describe as "acu-land."

Yes. Acupuncture has been shown to improve ovarian function, regulate menstrual cycles, reduce stress hormones that interfere with implantation, and improve uterine blood flow. Dr. Winke works with patients both independently and alongside IVF protocols.

Acupuncture uses fine needles at specific points; cupping uses suction to release muscle tension and improve circulation; gua sha uses gentle scraping to relieve tightness. They’re often combined in one treatment plan.
