General Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine involving the insertion of very thin needles through the skin at strategic points on the body. It is primarily used to treat pain and increasingly used for overall wellness, including stress management.
Yes. When performed by a trained, licensed practitioner using sterile, single-use needles, acupuncture is extremely safe with minimal risk of side effects.
Most patients feel little to no pain. You may feel a slight pressure, tingling, or dull ache when a needle is inserted — this is called "de qi" and is a sign the needle is activating the acupuncture point. Most patients find the experience deeply relaxing.
Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body that correspond to neural pathways and fascial planes, triggering the release of endorphins, modulating the autonomic nervous system, and reducing inflammatory markers. Modern research continues to validate what classical practitioners observed thousands of years ago.
Most acute conditions respond within 3-6 treatments. Chronic conditions typically require 8-12 sessions for lasting change. Dr. Winke will give you a realistic treatment plan at your first visit.
New patient visits are 75 minutes. Follow-up Signature Treatments are 60 minutes. Express Treatments are 30 minutes.
What to Expect
Your first visit includes a comprehensive Chinese medical assessment: medical history review, tongue diagnosis, pulse diagnosis at multiple positions, physical and orthopedic examination, and a full acupuncture treatment. You will leave with a clear treatment plan.
Loose, comfortable clothing is best. We need access to your arms and legs and sometimes your back and abdomen. We provide draping for all treatments.
Yes — eat a light meal 1-2 hours before. Do not come on an empty stomach or immediately after a large meal.
We recommend avoiding intense exercise for a few hours after treatment. Light walking is fine.
Conditions & Effectiveness
Acupuncture has demonstrated clinical effectiveness for pain management (back pain, neck pain, headaches, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia), neurological conditions, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, anxiety, insomnia, fertility support, and much more. See our full list of conditions.
Acupuncture reduces pain by stimulating A-delta and C nerve fibers, triggering endorphin and enkephalin release, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, and modulating the pain gate mechanism in the spinal cord.
Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reduces cortisol levels, increases serotonin and dopamine, and promotes the deep relaxation response patients often describe as "acu-land."
Yes. Acupuncture has been shown to improve ovarian function, regulate menstrual cycles, reduce stress hormones that interfere with implantation, and improve uterine blood flow. Dr. Winke works with patients both independently and alongside IVF protocols.
