Gentle Current. Deeper Relief.
Electro-Acupuncture in Boca Raton: fine needles plus a gentle current for back, neck, nerve and sports pain.
Electro-Acupuncture in Boca Raton
What Is Electro-Acupuncture?
Some pain fades with rest. Other pain hangs on: a lower back that tightens whenever you sit too long, a neck that never fully loosens, or a nerve that keeps sending tingling down a leg. For pain like this, Dr. Matthew Winke, DACM, often adds electro-acupuncture (also written electroacupuncture) to your acupuncture plan.
Fine, sterile, single-use needles are placed at points chosen for your condition. Small clips connect selected pairs of needles to a compact device that sends a gentle current between them, adjusted to your comfort. The current keeps working while you rest, which is why it is often chosen for deep muscle tension.
- Less pain
- Looser muscles
- Calmer nerves
- Easier movement

Electro-Acupuncture is part of your acupuncture visit whenever Dr. Matthew Winke, DACM, decides it fits. Each visit follows the same flow:
- 1
History and goals
Dr. Winke goes over your health history, your symptoms and the activities you want back.
- 2
Assessment
A Chinese medicine assessment with tongue and pulse diagnosis, plus a physical and orthopedic exam.
- 3
Personalized treatment
Classical acupuncture points, with electro-acupuncture, cupping, PEMF and infrared light added as needed.
- 4
Rest
You relax on the table while the treatment works.
What it feels like
Most people feel little or nothing as the fine needles go in, sometimes a quick pinch or a dull, heavy feeling. Once the device is switched on, the current usually feels like a light tapping, pulsing or buzzing near the needles. Some patients notice a small, rhythmic muscle twitch.
The setting starts low. If anything feels sharp, hot or uncomfortable, say so, and your acupuncturist will lower the setting or disconnect that lead.
Your first appointment is a 75-minute New Patient Visit that includes a full evaluation, a personalized care plan and your first treatment. Follow-up Signature Acupuncture visits are 60 minutes. Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
Is Electro-Acupuncture Right for Me?
Tell Dr. Winke before treatment if any of these apply to you:
- You have a pacemaker, defibrillator or any other implanted electrical device, or a heart rhythm condition.
- You are pregnant or think you might be pregnant.
- You have epilepsy or another seizure disorder.
- You have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners.
- You have numbness or reduced feeling in the area being treated.
- You have broken skin, a rash, an infection or another skin issue where needles would be placed.
Also share your other health conditions and medications, so Dr. Winke can decide whether to use the current, skip it or choose another approach. This is general information, not medical advice.

Electro-Acupuncture FAQs
Most people find it comfortable. The needles are hair-thin, and the intensity is set to your comfort and can be turned down at any time.
The needles and points are the same. Electro-Acupuncture adds a mild current between selected needles, so the area keeps receiving stimulation throughout the treatment.
A TENS unit sends current through adhesive pads on the skin, often used at home. Electro-Acupuncture sends it through needles that a licensed acupuncturist places at specific points as part of a full treatment plan.
That depends on your condition, how long you have had it and how you respond. Dr. Winke sets a plan after your evaluation and reassesses your progress along the way.
Yes. Performed by a licensed acupuncturist with sterile, single-use needles, it is safe for most adults. Review the safety list above with Dr. Winke before treatment.
Electro-Acupuncture is included in our acupuncture visits when it is used, so there is nothing separate to book. Acupuncture Xperts is a cash-pay clinic and does not accept insurance. For visit pricing and payment options, see our Cost & Insurance page.
It's used for back pain, sciatica, neck pain, neuropathy, sports injuries and deep muscle tension. At your New Patient Visit, Dr. Winke evaluates your condition and tells you whether it belongs in your plan.
Yes. Depending on what your evaluation shows, Dr. Winke may pair it with classical acupuncture, dry needling, cupping, PEMF or infrared light.
