What Is High Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is the force of blood against artery walls; it is called high (hypertension) when it stays elevated over time. Because it usually causes no symptoms, many people do not know they have it — which is why regular checks matter.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure is a leading, modifiable risk factor for heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease. The good news is that it responds well to lifestyle change and, when needed, effective medications.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine view, elevated blood pressure is sometimes associated with "Liver" and stress-related patterns, and acupuncture is used to support relaxation — but the evidence does not show it lowers blood pressure meaningfully, so we present it strictly as stress support.

High blood pressure is common and serious — often called the "silent" condition because it usually causes no symptoms while quietly raising the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. It deserves honest information and proper medical care.

At Acupuncture Xperts in Boca Raton, we are clear and upfront: acupuncture is not a treatment for high blood pressure. We offer it only as low-risk support for stress alongside the medical management and lifestyle changes that genuinely control blood pressure.

What the Research Says

Blood pressure is a serious medical matter, so honesty here is essential. The best evidence does not support acupuncture as a treatment for high blood pressure. Here is what the research shows.

Randomized Trial

SHARP — Acupuncture vs. Sham for Blood Pressure

In this rigorous sham-controlled trial (192 participants), neither individualized nor standardized acupuncture lowered blood pressure more than sham — blood pressure fell similarly in all groups. The trial found no antihypertensive benefit of acupuncture beyond placebo.

Systematic Review

Acupuncture for Hypertension — Cochrane review

This Cochrane review (22 trials, 1,744 participants) found only short-term effects within 24 hours in sham-controlled trials, while the single trial with 3–6 month follow-up showed no sustained effect. The authors concluded there is "no evidence for the sustained blood-pressure-lowering effect of acupuncture" needed to manage chronic hypertension.

Please read this clearly: acupuncture is NOT a treatment for high blood pressure, and you should never stop or reduce blood-pressure medication based on it. High blood pressure is usually symptomless and raises the risk of heart attack and stroke, so it needs proper medical management. Acupuncture may be low-risk support for the stress side of things — that is all we claim. Individual results vary.

Lifestyle & Self-Care

The lifestyle steps below have strong evidence for supporting healthy blood pressure and complement your physician’s care and any medication. They are worth doing consistently and tracking over time.

Home blood-pressure monitoring is one of the most useful things you can do — it shows what is actually working.

Diet

Heart-Healthy Eating (DASH)

  1. Favor vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean protein; limit sodium and highly processed foods (the DASH pattern).
  2. Watch salt, which raises blood pressure in many people.
  3. Limit alcohol.

How much: Ongoing

Movement

Regular Activity & Weight

  1. Aim for regular aerobic activity most days, as your physician advises.
  2. Even modest weight loss can lower blood pressure if relevant.
  3. Build up gradually and consistently.

How much: Most days of the week

Support

Stress, Sleep & Monitoring

  1. Manage stress with slow breathing and downtime — chronic stress affects blood pressure.
  2. Prioritize good sleep and screen for sleep apnea if you snore.
  3. Monitor your blood pressure at home and share readings with your physician.

How much: Daily

Stop any exercise that sharply increases pain, or causes numbness, tingling, or pain radiating into a limb, and consult a qualified provider. These general examples are educational and do not replace an individual evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honestly, no — a rigorous sham-controlled trial (SHARP) and a Cochrane review found no sustained blood-pressure-lowering effect beyond placebo. We will not claim otherwise. Acupuncture may be low-risk support for stress; medical management and lifestyle change are what control blood pressure.

No — please never stop or reduce blood-pressure medication based on acupuncture. Doing so can be dangerous. Any medication changes must be made by your physician based on your readings.

Because it is usually symptomless while raising the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. That is exactly why regular monitoring and treatment matter even when you feel well.

A heart-healthy (DASH) diet, reduced sodium, regular activity, healthy weight, limited alcohol, good sleep, stress management, and — when needed — medication. Home monitoring helps you and your doctor see what is working. See the self-care section above.

Yes — acupuncture is low-risk and does not interfere with blood-pressure medications. If we consider herbs, we coordinate carefully with your physician because some can interact with cardiovascular drugs.

Because blood pressure is genuinely serious, and honesty protects your health. We will support the stress side and cheer on your lifestyle efforts — while your medical team manages the blood pressure itself.
